10th January 2016

Today, my darling Ralph, you insisted on waking me super early in the morning by whispering “wake up now mummy” continuously in my face.  I love that you are so persistent and don’t give up even if you do have to drag me out of bed by my ankles…..

We woke up to an unusual grey summers day here in Perth but it was a nice break to take a morning walk along the beach without melting at 7:30 in the morning, which turns out is also the same time and place that all of Perth’s lycra wearing fitness addicts do their daily exercise. I happened to be the one counting all the ships/ surfers/ dogs at the top of my voice….

on being grateful

hello my blog, hello my friends that read my little blog!! oh how i’ve missed this little space that is just mine.

it may be the 4th, well it’s now actually nearly the 5th,  but better late than never hey?- so the happiest of new years to you all- i hope you’ve had an awesome time doing all the things you love with all the people you love.

last night was the first time in ages that I was home alone and  it felt like total luxury after a busy few weeks of holidaying, epic car journeys, entertaining visitors and general christmas busyness so it seemed like a perfect chance to catch up with you before either Big D returned from the movies or his folks returned from their evening out; instead I went to bed ridiculously early and snuggled the little man- not exactly riveting stuff to the start of 2016, but hey ho it’s all about lifes simple pleasures!  Continue reading

8 things you need to know on becoming a fifo family

when i say becoming a fifo family takes a little of getting used to i mean that in the most obvious sense. because, of course its going to be different, there is someone missing from your family for weeks at a time! and if you don’t feel different, then i guess we have an altogether different kinda problem on our hands….

^^^Ralph practically jumping for joy over Big D’s return^^^

In the two weeks that Big D has been away my head has been full of mush, just the usual run-of-the-mill mush but i have really been struggling to process my thoughts which is annoying, I’ve been falling in a worn out heap tucking myself into bed at 8pm but on the rare occasion I’m not absolutely knackered i have been watching Absolutely Fabulous from the beginnnig (which is still as ace as ever) whilst getting a little drunk on the sofa (after drinking a whole glass of wine-so cool i know!!!) but here is a little bit of what i have learned about the fifo life so far…..

1. you will hear strange scary noises as soon as you switch off your bedside lamp. of course you instantly think that axe murderers are waiting outside your door so you do what any one in your situation would do….hide under the duvet (or just sleep with the light on-those axe-murders will think you’re an insomniac!)

2. you spend most of your bedtime routine doubly, triply checking that all the doors are locked and you may or may not choose to leave some booby traps in the shape of a two year olds toy trucks on the floor by the doors. If those axe-murders do get in they will get really sore feet. If it worked in Home Alone….

3. you can’t blame your other half for zooming through all the loo roll or the wine or the chocolate stash- oopps sorry Big D!

4. even though you have a huge bed and dream of sleeping like a starfish when your partner is home you will probably still just stick to ‘your’ side once they are gone.

5. you will surprise yourself how easily you slip into your new solo parent routine-oh yeah you can just call yourself Supermum. I’m one step away from wearing a superwoman costume 24/7…..

6. you can eat whatever you like. Im a big fan of crunchy vegetables, quinoa and anything cooked from the Honestly Healthy cookbook whereas Big D likes his vegetables cooked to their soggy death, potatoes with everything and meat, lots of it…..

7. you think Skype is the best invention ever. especially at Ralph’s bedtime and especially when Big D can recite the Gruffalo from the start….

8. and when have those days that feel like are never ending just think of all those extra frequent flyer points and start planning a mega holiday!

but the best thing of all, is for sure the return! Welcome home Big D xxx

Hair raising Saturday!

The Saturday just past we eventually made it to Winterland which is currently taking place in Fremantle (I wanted to go the weekend before but the rain put a stop to that plan).  I personally never need an excuse to venture to good old Freo, quite simply I adore the place even on a busy sunny Saturday afternoon; The streets are bustling, the cafes are spilling out onto the pavement and  the market is jam packed with locals and tourists – Big D on the other hand, well this is his nightmare.  But still, off we went with the most prettiest take out coffee cups in our paws and on the very loose promise that i was sure that i had read somewhere there was going to be a snow machine….. Ralph’s most favourite toys (at two years old)

This week started with some super soggy stay indoors kind of weather which always makes me anxious. What are we going to do ALL day? Ralph and I are both the stay outdoors all day long kind of people and the rain really buggers that up- there is only so many wet puddles you can jump in before your socks get soggy and you want to go home (that’s usually me!)
Anyways i’m getting slightly off track….being nearly 2 and a half its fair to say Ralph definatly knows what he likes when it comes to toys and it turns out that some of his favourites are some of the toys he’s had for ages!!

I love you because you support me and my ideas and my passions (and don’t complain too much if potential hobbies are still in the box unopened from Christmas).

I love you because you understand that if there is ANY chocolate in the house it is always rightfully mine, even if it was yours to begin with……

I love you because you are sensitive and caring and kind and thoughtful, when a lot of the time I can be the opposite of these.

I love you because you have awesome taste in tv shows- oh hello Mad Men marathons!!!

I love you because each and every day we laugh.

Happy Birthday to you xxxxx

Happy second birthday Ralph

We've had such a beautiful whirlwind of birthday celebrations over the weekend, that it was an awesome treat to get to lay down on the grass under the sun during our animal spotting at the zoo today whilst Ralph had a wee nap and Big D and I let out a huge sigh of relief that we made it to year two pretty much unscathed! Well kind of!

^^^such a rare moment I had to get a snap of us relaxing together!^^^

Two years man, where have you gone and what have you done with our little baby?! Ralph is so, so long I swear he will be taller than me before he reaches 10! But no matter how tall you will end up I always want you to know that I love you more and more each day. Infact I never knew I could love someone as much as you and am so incredibly greatful what a special gift you are to us both, even including those trying and difficult days where the tears are mainly mine! (mamas reading this are probably nodding in unison here!)

^^^i was way more impressed with the sparkler candle than the birthday boy^^^

Each and every day you teach me to be more patient, more caring, more selfless than I ever thought could be humanly possible. Happy birthday to our darling dude. We hope you had the best birthday!

We love you!
